plunging

standing on the Florida shoreline
looking into the ocean brine
when the children were babies
they played in the tide

I guess that greed has made that disappear
I guess that innocence & carefreeness has been drowned
in dread & fear
I guess that optimism can be dismissed as naivete
I guess that idealism has had its day

oil on water is not just a phrase they say
oil on water suffocates & preys
on all living things wherever they lay

avarice & greed are pollutants
that means that as long as money is god
& that gold is king
all living creatures are imprisoned
in the “land of the free”
